MiCA Deadline: USDT Exits EU Casino Cashiers, USDC Stays

Europe’s MiCA stablecoin rules have forced online casinos serving EEA players to drop Tether’s USDT from their cashiers, while USD Coin keeps its compliant status. The split is not about market size — USDT remains the larger stablecoin by capitalization — but about which issuer met the EU’s licensing bar.
MiCA stablecoin deadline — what it means for EU casino cashiers
The MiCA transitional period for crypto-asset service providers ended on July 1, 2026, after which any entity offering non-compliant tokens to EU clients falls outside the rules, according to Scorechain’s analysis of the regulation. Casinos and crypto exchanges licensed in the EEA had to stop onboarding deposits and withdrawals in tokens that lack e-money authorization, which pushed USDT off regulated cashiers region by region rather than overnight.
Why USDT loses its e-money token status under MiCA
Tether never applied for MiCA e-money token authorization, objecting to the requirement that 60% of reserves be held in EU bank deposits. That refusal triggered a wave of delistings: Coinbase removed USDT for European users in December 2024, Crypto.com followed in January 2025, Binance cut it off on March 31, 2025, and Revolut ended support on August 31, 2026. The European Securities and Markets Authority added pressure on October 8, 2026, issuing an opinion that requires MiCA-authorised firms to remediate client exposure to non-compliant stablecoins by January 8, 2027 — leaving little room for cashiers to keep USDT rails open past that date.
USD Coin keeps its MiCA compliance — the stablecoin that survives
USD Coin is one of only two tokens among the top ten stablecoins by market cap that comply with the new EU rules, alongside the smaller euro-denominated EURC. Circle became the first global stablecoin issuer to meet MiCA requirements after France’s Autorité de Contrôle Prudentiel et de Résolution granted its Circle Mint Europe subsidiary an electronic money institution licence on July 1, 2024.
Crypto casino payment alternatives once USDT exits EU cashiers
USD Coin is the direct crypto substitute for EEA players losing USDT access, since it is redeemable 1:1 against the US dollar with reserves managed by regulated financial institutions. Players who still want a crypto rail rather than fiat can look at Bitcoin casinos, where deposits are not affected by the stablecoin rules at all.
E-wallet and bank-transfer options for EU players losing USDT support
E-wallets remain unaffected by MiCA’s stablecoin provisions and stay the simplest fallback for EEA cashiers. Skrill, Neteller, Payz and Jeton all process euro deposits and withdrawals without touching crypto-asset licensing at all.
Where to play now — compliant crypto casino categories
For EEA players, the practical split going forward is USD Coin or EURC for stablecoin deposits, Bitcoin casinos for non-stablecoin crypto play, and e-wallets for straightforward fiat transfers. More payments and crypto coverage is available in the Payments & crypto section.
